The Ask

Design a 9x9-inch accordion book featuring the work of a renowned graphic designer.

Creating a comprehensive design book required extensive research and documentation. My research process involved understanding Saul Bass’s biography, studying his design philosophy, and examining his lengthy portfolio of work.

I decided by dividing up his work into his Film Posters, Title Sequences, and Logos, the flow of the book would be more organized and digestible.

It was crucial to find the balance between showcasing Bass’s designs and providing commentary. Developing a compelling visual narrative and layout design for the book was a critical aspect of the project.

One challenge I faced was typography. Initially, I chose an Adobe font for the titles, but it felt inconsistent with Bass's hand-drawn, cut-out style. To better capture his essence, I returned to Adobe Illustrator and drew all the title fonts by hand.

final thoughts

Working on the design book project about Saul Bass has truly been an illuminating journey that deepened my understanding of design history and its impact on modern-day practices. Saul Bass’s creative genius, his ability to communicate with simplicity, and his commitment to craftsmanship continue to inspire designers like myself around the world.
